As an instructor, I would prefer painters to experience watercolor before they try any other medium. It has a terrible reputation for being the most difficult and unforgiving, which I find a terrible misrepresentation. It has it’s demands, and its bonuses, like any other medium. But if you start with watercolor, you have acquired a sense of reserve, control, subtlety, and pacing, as well as a crucial understanding of translucency and transparency, that will enhance any other media you choose after. |
