Pen / Pencil / Pastel |
Graphite (pencil), Silverpoint, Pen, Pastel, Colored Pencil, Charcoal, Conte Crayon, are all “dry” media. But, to my mind, they have many of the same characteristics in the application as paint and sculpting. They can be applied forcefully and “dense” like an opaque paint, or in delicate veils of transparency, like watercolor. The line and form can carve at the white surface like reductive sculpture, or build onto a richly pigmented ground like a classic oil. Their great appeal is the paced, contemplative, almost meditative mode they require, which makes them a preferred range of media for the magical and otherworldly. |
