Fantasy Black & Whites |
Ball point pen may seem like an odd media choice, but I have been working with it for a long time. This kind of drawing has evolved into a kind of meditation for me. It began while I was riding the New York subways to work. Sharpening pencils was awkward and messy, but the pen was always available and ready. Ideas develop slowly, as there is no erasing, and no pencil preliminaries. I graze the surface of the paper with the pen, to pick up the texture, the “Bic” version of dry-brush. Developing the volume requires layers of hatching and cross hatching. When more graphic, decorative line or sharp linear, effect is in order, I may switch to a permanent fine point tech pen. I start with a basic vision, but never know exactly where the image will lead me. |
